Dominicus van den Hoogen, born in Reek on June 12, 1656, professed as a (Carmelite) White Friar on September 13, 1676, ordained as a priest on June 15, 1680, died in Mechlin on September 13, 1722 as a result of bronchitis. Around 1930 some historical notes were made by H.W.J. Smits in Reek. In 1990 these notes were owned by one Mr van Heeswijk in Oss. The families Smits and van Heeswijk owned a painting in the past depicting Dominicus van den Hoogen. It is about this painting. Where is this painting? According to Mr van Heeswijk this painting is to be found in the University of Utrecht. A first inquiry some years ago, however, came to nothing.
Below is a picture of the painting and a view of a room where the same painting hangs on the wall. On the other side of the painting is the following written down (in accordance with the historical notes by H.W.J. Smits): "van den Hoogen, born in Reek 1656. White Friar (Carmelite) under the name Dominicus à Navitate B M V (Beatae Virginis Mariae) Prefect of the Order (and Definitor) died in Mechelen 1722. He was a learned man (Meijereijnsch Memorie Boek in Reek). At Schutjes one can find of him, for instance, " of his rhetoric there is still proof in the works left behind by him Paquôt XIII 210". He certainly was a brother of Maria van den Hooghe."

Who knows where this painting now is?
